Unlike traditional “open surgery,” which requires large incisions, minimally-invasive surgeries involve much smaller incisions.
Dr. Liu performs even the most complicated hernia repairs and other general surgeries through incisions only 5-8mm (¼”-⅓”) long.
A robotics-assisted surgery is just that - a surgery assisted by robotics. The surgeon is still doing the entire operation, meaning the robot is not autonomous. Dr. Liu is able to use the robot to enhance everything his own 2 hands can do. A robotics-assisted surgery gives Dr. Liu extra hands that also allow him to assist himself rather than relying on a separate bed-side assistant.
Dr. Liu has successfully completed 1000+ surgeries using leading-edge robotics-assisted surgical techniques, and more than 3000 hernia repairs - open, laparoscopic and robotic-assisted.. The majority of his patients have a much faster recovery time, less pain, shortened hospital stays, and minimum scarring.
Dr. Liu covers the following general surgical procedures:

No, hernias do not go away on their own. If left untreated, a hernia may get worse and can cause other problems. In most cases, surgery is the best option.
See if you’re a candidate for minimally-invasive hernia repair surgery.
A hernia is when the lining of your abdomen walls poke through weakened muscle tissue. Sewing that weakened muscle tissue back together is not enough to prevent future hernias.
That’s where mesh for hernias comes in. Mesh is a sheet of material designed to reinforce a hernia repair. It can be permanent or absorbable.
When used by a world-class surgeon, such as Dr. Liu, mesh for hernias is safe to use. It’s been around for almost 50 years, and millions of people have had it for their hernia repairs without any problems.
The most researched evidence shows that patients who did not have mesh for their hernia repair were much more likely to have recurrent hernias. The same research shows that those who did have mesh for hernia repair had low risk of chronic or persisting pain or complications. Overall, people spent less time in the hospital and returned to their usual daily activities sooner after mesh repair.
If you have questions about the use of mesh for hernias, then book your hernia consultation. You’ll walk away with all the answers and information to your questions.
The exact pain medication given after hernia surgery may differ from person to person. For simple hernias, 90+% of patients only take Tylenol and Ibuprofen after surgery. For larger or more complex hernias, typically you’ll take a narcotic pain (such as Norco or hydrocodone) medication in addition to Tylenol and Ibuprofen to help control pain or discomfort.
However, because Dr. Liu uses advanced technology and minimally-invasive techniques, we have seen 90+% of our patients not need any narcotics. In those patients who need narcotics, they use 80% less narcotics after surgery than the typical patient after hernia surgery.
